FREE/REDUCED APPLICATIONS: Parents, if you have not filled out an application for Free or Reduced meals for 2009-10, please do so as soon as possible. Applications need to be filled out each year. Applications are available at school sites or at the Child Nutrition Department at 1810 W. Detroit. We are happy to provide assistance if you need help filling out the application.
MEAL CHOICES: Each child is eligible to receive one (1) Breakfast and one (1) lunch per day, according to the Federal Guidelines. It is important that you and your child understand what constitutes a reimbursable meal
For Breakfast, we offer milk, fruit or juice, and a choice from either the Grains/bread group – i.e. Cereal, Toast, Muffins, etc. or from the meat/Meat Alternate group – i.e. Meat, Eggs, Peanut Butter, cheese, etc.
For Lunch, we offer a variety of items that are broken into five (5) components. For a meal to be considered reimbursable, the student must take at least three (3) of the five (5) food items that are offered. The required components are one (1) serving of meat or meat alternate, one (1) serving of vegetables, one (1) serving of fruit or juice, one (1) serving of grain/bread, and one (1) serving of milk. Your child may choose to take all five items offered, but cannot take less than three to be within the established guidelines for a reimbursable meal. Should your child want any a La Carte items, they must be purchased separately.
Students on Free/Reduced meals can choose from any reimbursable lunch line. They are not limited to the Main Line. This includes the Pizza, Burger Bar and Salad Lines at secondary schools.
CHARGE POLICY: Elementary Students will be allowed to charge breakfast and lunch for three days. After that, if the charges are not paid, they will be given a sandwich and milk for an addition three days. During this time, every effort will be made to contact the parents to inform them of the charges. During the last week of school before Winter Break and the last week of school for the year, there will be no charging allowed.
Secondary Students will be allowed to charge one day followed by three days of sandwiches and milk.
If you have questions about your child’s account, please contact the cafeteria manager at their school, or contact the Child Nutrition office.
ALLERGIES: We make every effort to accommodate special dietary needs. In order to do so, we need documentation from a licensed physician. An assessment must be made by the physician of what the dietary needs are and an original copy of the assessment needs to be on file with the Child Nutrition Department. If your child has special dietary needs, contact Luanne Goodacre, director of Child Nutrition, at 259-4565.
